She’s Doing It: Brenda Sperduti Leading Her Dreams

Brenda SperdutiI’ve known Phoenix City Council candidate Brenda Sperduti as a civic activist for over 20 years. Because I so often encourage women to run for public office, it’s only right that I do what I can to highlight the accomplishments and character of those I’d like to see making the decisions at all levels of government.

Special note to my Phoenix friends: Early Voting deadline is fast approaching and the election ends November 8th. Please remember to cast your vote. For election information, click here.

Here’s Brenda in her own words…

She’s Doing It: Sergeant Bernadette Smith Making a Difference

Sgt. Bernadette Smith
I had the honor to meet Sergeant Bernadette Smith at the YWCA Women’s Leadership Conference in Tucson. We had written back and forth, as she had contacted me via this website after discovering No Excuses in a local bookstore. Once I met her in person I knew she was someone you had to meet. She is the epitome of “Power-To” utilized gracefully in a very male-centric profession. As you’ll see she also has a keen sense of humor about it.

Here is her inspiring story for this week’s “She’s Doing It.”

She’s Doing It: Emily May of Hollaback!

Emily May - Hollaback! Are you afraid on your daily commute? Leering glances. Unwanted physical contact. Harassing, suggestive derogatory comments thrown at you while you are just minding your own business on the bus, train or simply walking down the street. Are you fed up in having to always be on your guard when you are just trying to live your life? Talk to most women and these experiences are ones that have caused not only fear for your own personal safety but also a sense of deep outrage.

In this week’s She’s Doing It, I couldn’t be prouder to highlight Emily May, co-founder and Executive Director of Hollaback! as someone who has taken the global problem of street harassment and embraced Power Tool #7: Create a Movement with both arms and mobile technology!

Here’s Your “Taking AAUW Home” Personal Reflections and Action Guide

It’s been great to be in Washington DC and an honor to give the closing keynote at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) National Convention. AAUW features in an important part of women’s history I share in No Excuses (page 175 if you have the book). That makes it extra special to be here.
